Taste / Feel

Cherry Fun Dip / adult recess / watermelon agua fresca / grilling everything you possibly can from the farmers market / strawberries grown in limestone / lightning bugs / lobster rolls / boat shoes / no shoes / cold fried chicken / colder water / night swimming / day tripping (to wherever makes your heart the happiest with no intention of ever turning back)

I've been helping other people make rosé since 2012, and I made the first Marigny Rosé in 2015, in much the same style that I learned in: Direct press, settle the wine in tank, rack to barrel after 48 hours, neutral barrel fermentation w/ ambient yeast only, roll the barrels out into the cold to block malolactic fermentation from starting up, add some SO2, filter to sterile before malolactic can kick back up and bottle it.

I've always thought that getting better at the craft of making wine meant feeling more and more comfortable taking something out of the equation each vintage. Like most things, small steps lead to long lasting change, so with that in mind, here's how the 2019 (and 2018 for the OG's) Unfined / Unfiltered Pinot Noir Rosé was produced: Pick early enough that the natural acid in the fruit can still shine, even after malolactic fermentation. Direct press the fruit into neutral French Oak barrels without any settling, exactly as we’ve done for the Direct Press Pinot Gris. Ferment wine on full lees (Sur Lie) until dry. Leave the barrels in the cellar and let malolactic fermentation occur. Add SO2 post malo and let the SO2 integrate into the wine. Rack the barrels to tank and bottle with no fining or filtration, just as we would for any other wine we produce. The magic is more in the farming, the altitude of our main North Plains vineyard where 100% of this fruit was sourced, and the picking decision, which most people would categorize as "sparkling levels" of ripeness.

What you get when the wine is in your glass is something that lives in between austere and fancy free + delicate and bullet proof. As far as I can tell, it's these inherent juxtapositions that make wine, and life, interesting, playful and worth diving into. So delve into some fresh seafood, rich cheeses (we prefer full flavored goat), and a crumb-driven sourdough bread...hopefully in your backyard, surrounded by people that challenge you, inspire you and show you the full-hearted nature of love.

Directly pressed into neutral French Oak barrels (no oak flavor imparted due to multiple uses) with no settling prior to going to barrel (full lees contact). Wine was never racked and lees were never stirred.

Bottled from a stainless holding tank after being racked directly from barrel. No fining, no filtration.
